So I’m really into this web stuff. I think I would much rather work in web development than electrical engineering, well, there are a few things I like in electrical engineering, but not as many as what I could do in web development. Problem is, my major is electrical engineering.
That’s because I really only got into this stuff last summer. Before that my time was 99.9 percent consumed by electrical engineering and gaming. Hardly any web design at all. But then I decided to sign up for the introductory course for web design & programming at Cornell, and over the summer I started learning in advance. Who knew I would learn so much so fast?
More importantly, who knew I would get so tired of electrical engineering? I enjoyed my digital design courses, but this semester I’m taking microelectronics and electromagnetic waves. I’m doing allright in em. waves, but I don’t like the stuff at all. Just not interesting. And microelectronics, oh my goodness microelectronics, I don’t get it. It’s not just that I’m failing, I’m also not understanding the material at all. And even if I do study long and hard and learn the stuff in time, I still won’t like it. I won’t want a job in it. Not at all. Not when I could be building websites and talking about CSS and PHP and other alphabet fun.
So I thought about changing my major. But I’m in my third year already, which means I’m behind on the requirements for the major that covers web development: information science and systems technology. I don’t think switching is an option.
And the way electrical engineering works at Cornell, I don’t have much spare time to teach myself. This web design stuff cuts into my sleep, because I already have enough hours taken up with homework and studying… so some nights I sleep 3 hours, most nights 5. Not fun. And as finals get closer, it only gets worse.
So what? Am I being stupid for thinking that maybe I could graduate with a degree in electrical engineering, and maybe with enough knowledge of web development, get a job that involves working with the web? Would you hire someone for a web design / development position with good skills, but not the right major (and not as much experience, I guess)? Should I really try to switch? Should I do an independent major (no department, standard engineering degree, take whatever courses I want to build my skillset… not very desirable)? Insert more questions here?
Let me know. Until then, I’m going to try to wrap my head around these “mosfet cascode transistors.” ugh.

Responses to my articlehey, I’m in the same situation - first yr ensc at SFU. I love design, but I figured that once something turns into a job, it becomes less fun :]
I do quite a bit of freelance and even worked at a largish agency for a while, but I still want to be an engineer ’cause it has been what I wanted to do since I was very little.
Don’t fret, there’s a lot of design opportunities in engineering. Industrial design and… architectural visualizations for example.
Hm, I’m not so interested in artistic design, as much coding and making websites work. Sure, I was interviewed by Microsoft for a division that involved designing products, and it was very interesting, but not quite so interesting as, say, working on some next-gen web software, or being an expert in CSS 3.
Besides, Microsoft decided not to hire me
I would say software programming still lies in the domain of engineering, though I don’t see how electrical stuff will help…
just do what you feel like and things will work out
I had originally thought about studying computer science at Cornell, but Cornell is a bad place to study computer science, if you have no prior experience. Too many child prodigies, and too many professors who think they are good teachers because their class is full of prodigies. That’s why I went with electrical engineering… you can’t really be a child prodigy in that (though you can be really smart, I later discovered).
As of now I’m sticking with my electrical engineering track. I’m taking signals processing, RF circuits, electromagnetics & communications, intermediate web programming, and german 2. Maybe someday I’ll be a server farm administrator
