When designer’s block hits the fan

Posted January 4 in Design.

I’ve been having serious “designer’s block” lately. It’s mainly because I haven’t been using my computer while at home, nor have I had much time to actually use the computer at all. This really bites since winter break should be the perfect time to get things done. Even worse, I’m also having trouble deciding what I want this site to look like.

Well, actually, I figured out what I want it to look like. Unfortunately, someone beat me to it. I want Ordered List. It isn’t that Ordered List is exactly, pixel-precisely what I want my site to look like, but if there is anything out there that is any closer, I don’t know it.

So here comes the tough part. Design an original site, while allowing for another site to inspire it. I think it’s doable. I definitely like what Steve Smith did with Ordered List. Nice, sharp divisions, no gradients, big text, bright colors. I’ve been thinking that I want to pursue similar ideas in my own design, rather than trying to fit rounded corners and gradients into my fluid layout. I don’t know if the end result will be any good, but it’s worth a try. Definitely worth a try.
