The Colorfest contest

Posted on January 23, 2006.

I never got around to visiting the Colorfest site after the winner was announced, even though the link was sitting right in my toolbar, taking up a lot of space too. I managed to get around to it today and I just wanted to congratulate Karen McDade for her winning entry, "Blood Sweat Tears and Dirt." If you are thinking of making a layout to dampen the spirits of your visitors or express the horror of a battlefield, try this color scheme out.

All joking aside, Colorfest has to be the dumbest contest ever conceived. It's nice to emphasize effective color choices in web design, but how does one actually make a serious attempt at winning this contest? Maybe Karen did more than just pick 4 colors at random, but I doubt it. Anyway, let me tell you about one of the entries I made. This was my top contestant, and I was a little surprised it didn't win. Here's what I did:

I looked at the Colorfest page and thought, "hmm, what do these guys like? I know, I'll use something they were already satisfied with." I whipped out my handy Colorzilla tool and took four colors right off the screen. That's right, I took the lame green, blue, orange and white used in the Colorfest header. Aren't I witty?

Actually I bet a lot of people did that, but how many of them wrote about it? Okay, nevermind that. I'm off to install a wireless router, and then I'm going to add 4 awesome songs from We Heart Katamari to my RADIO.BLOG. Even if you've never listened to my radio.blog before, you really should hear these songs. I'm very partial to them.

Update: I've discovered through my stats that I have made it to the #1 spot on MSN Search for the query "montoya." Ha! I win! Ok, back to that router…

Update 2: The router worked. I've got my own wireless access point now! If anyone wants to play Nintendo DS via Wi-Fi, let me know!

I saw the website for Colorfest contest. You're right. DUMBEST contest in the world. I wonder how many people had ever-so-slightly similar colors to the winner's choices.
