Leave it to me to blog during my vacation… but this deserves mentioning.
I got a response to my letter to the Cornell Office of Web Communications:
Hi Christian —
Your offer is very generous and I’ll certainly take it under consideration. Would you be willing to meet with me to discuss things further?
Ahem.
To dalieu, Rich, Bobo, Stuart, Mike, Jordie, and Yvonne: I was right, you were not. Welcome to the real real world, where knowing your own abilities and telling it like it is, sans bull and soft talk, matters most. Ever heard of “toot your own horn?” Learn to do it, or enjoy life in obscurity. And please, if you feel so inclined to never read my blog again, then don’t. I’d rather have readership that gets it.
And to everyone else: I promise, this is the last blunt entry from me, at least for a while. I’ll have some wishy-washy entries about design and technology soon.

Responses to my articleThere’s a difference between confidence and arrogance. I’m perfectly able to “toot” if need be, but there are ways of tooting without coming off as an arrogant jerk. And it’s not about being right or wrong, it’s a matter of perception. They obviously didn’t think you were being overly confident or arrogant. That doesn’t mean we were wrong or you were right, it just means exactly that: they didn’t think you were being arrogant.
However, if you think that approach will work every time, then I think you’re in for a big surprise.
And who said I didn’t want to read your blog anymore? Just because we disagree on something, that doesn’t make your content any less interesting. I thought the point of blogs was to generate discussion, that will inevitably be opposing at times. Am I wrong? But if you’d rather I didn’t, then so be it.
Hi again,
If it sounded like I was attacking you, I didn’t mean for it to. I think it’s great you have the self-confidence to write a post like you did without worrying what your reader reaction would be. I was merely suggesting that next time, if you can’t handle legitimate criticism from your audience, you should try to tone down anything that will provoke it - and one thing that will definitely do that is suggesting your own inclusion in a blog network just because you happen to be more well known.
‘Tall bloggy’ syndrome, if you will.
I’m also disappointed you closed the comments on that post too - it could’ve made for a good debate.
You sound very condescending here, but perhaps I just don’t “get it.”
It is plain simple! When applying for anything you need to boost your confidence, play a little the arrogant and throw your trumps on the table.
Life is like poker at times, the cards are dealt. And you need to bluff your way out. Take that!
Wow, I’m surprised you are all still here. If you still want to read my blog, that’s great… you do get it after all.
I have to say that in blogging, success is driven by rank and fame. The top 100 is full of bloggers with big egos and their arrogance keeps them there. Sure, there are legitimate blogs like Cute Overload and Post Secret that are successful purely for their content, but those are exceptions.
Does that mean that I should be so blunt, or that arrogance will work in any other field? No, not at all. I just had a little ego trip, and it’s over now.
And I only closed comments on that last entry because I was dealing with some serious personal problems and I just couldn’t deal with comments at the time. Otherwise I would have kept it open.
Taken from the perspective of wanting to remain a ‘top dog’, then yes, writing in such a blatant manner is justified. Though it’s hard to understand for other bloggers who (a) Are still trying to make it to the top and/or (b) Have no intention of becoming ‘famous’ in the blogging world and/or (c) Like to keep their readers happy by retaining some modesty and thanking them for their success.
Writing such an ego-based post, for those kind of bloggers, would do the exact opposite of what they were trying to achieve. Try to look at the situation through the eyes of less established bloggers.
And my apologies for the ‘closing comments’ remark - I completely understand =)
Please… just stay in school forever. Talk about not being able to take some criticism. In the real world, not everything has a right or a wrong. Your opinion is your opinion. My opinion was that you were being egoistic. You even said you had an “ego trip.” So was I wrong? I don’t think so. Doesn’t matter because in the end you didn’t get picked, instead you sounded like you begged for a job. It’s a school, even if you were the worst blogger in the world, they would take FREE help.
Good luck with the real world. Just because people don’t agree with you doesn’t mean they’re wrong. This entry alone makes me feel like I’m even more right. I have an opinion, you have one too. You lost a returning customer because as a blogger you should know to appreciate a comment, even if it disagrees with you. It is feedback, it provides for discussion.
Tell the Tooth Fairy, Easter Rabbit, and Santa Claus “HI” for me.
dalieu: I still can’t believe you are taking this seriously. You’re a little better than that Scott guy, he was seriously hurt and vowed never to return again. It’s like a circus of emo goths.
I’ll make sure not to share personal endeavors around here anymore; if everyone is going to pipe in with their own skewed ideas about my area of expertise, and throw fits when I turn out to be right, then why bother? It’s not that I can’t take criticism; I just haven’t received any of value.
As for staying in school forever, that’s a personal attack I’m not about to entertain. If you are looking for a contest over who is more capable in the real world, look elsewhere.
Tell the Z-List “HI” for me.
Wow, you are as gracious in victory as you were in defeat–meaning, not at all. Congratulations for actually proving my assumptions about you were correct.
True, but there was never any defeat. What matters is that I met your expectations; I always aim to please.
Where do I sign up for your religion? Do we all get to think like you? Please post picture so I can hang it in my office.
If it seemed like I was attacking you, I apologise.
Jordie: I’m sorry too, I know I was a little mean
