All the Validation I Need

Posted on August 10, 2006.

Children are wise. We adults could should learn a lot from them.

Today my brother (age 10) mentioned that he likes my website. I imagine he brought it up because even though I am supposed to be on vacation from the Interweb, I have been mortally attached to it all day long.

He wanted to show me what he likes about it, so I pulled it up for him. His favorite 3 elements: Pac Man going down the middle, the Goomba in the bottom right corner, and Fire Mario climbing the vine. He also thought the lightbulbs in the last two sections were toadstools, which come to think of it, is a good guess. They do look just like Toad, though I don't think that was Mark's intention.

This is kind of a big deal, since my brother would never bother to read any of the actual text on my site, nor does he know who Domo-kun is (and I'll keep it that way, since I really don't want him to know about that whole killing kittens thing). I would even venture to say that this is more important than being featured at CSS Mania or Light on Dark, or not being featured at CSS Beauty or Stylegala. Hey, after the lousy comments today from the trolls on Digg, I would say I'm walking on air right now.

Forget the elitist galleries and dull tech geeks; what do your kids think of your design? Your significant other? Your mom? Do tell.

My husband upon seeing my new blog design stated "it's a website". Worked for me ;) It's great to have a gardener non-techie / use mac as ipod charger for a husband to bring you back down to earth and also put things into perspective.

I'm not 100% comfortable with your austere design, but it works so I can't complain too much. It's a good blog, but uniqueness rather than beauty is the theme, I think. The design could be a lot more professional, sharper, etc. Sometimes, too little is too much.

Sharper, yes. Professional, no. That just wouldn't represent me too well. I've been thinking about the next design for this site, but I'm highly limited in the amount of time I have and I don't want to make something that is only half as unique as this design. I figure I get 50% approval right now and that's not so bad; I could go with something simple and please everyone, or I could really give it some effort and take the risk in the hopes of making something phenomenal. Untill I figure that out, I at least have a unique design that I can live with.

And I find it hilarious that you linked yourself incorrectly. Two L's, two T's!

How about making it the way you like it? I mean, after that whole rant about selfishness a couple posts ago, I'm sure this is a touchy subject, but it is your site. For the record, though, I dig it.

Eh, in site design you always have to try and please others. This is, in fact, a design I like very much, but it doesn't sit well with a lot of visitors. I will probably have to aim for more approval in my next design if I want my blog to be more popular, which is my ultimate goal.

I'm personally a big fan of black/white/gray designs, because they're easy on the eyes and very readable. Content is king, as they say, and your site stays true to that.

I like the design - it's the dividers in your bottombar that ruin things.

My mum likes my blog, she even leaves comments occasionally :)

Sometimes I show my parents my website to get their opinion, but they keep wanting to know why I "change it so often". -headwall-

Jordie: just tell your parents this: how often do you change your hairstyle? wardrobe? etc?
