I was about to check out a (supposedly) funny video on YouTube when I came across this:
The nice thing about being up late is that I get to catch sites when they are undergoing changes while their users sleep. That is, most of their users, since I’m all about non-conformism and stuff. Having discovered that YouTube is down for “new features,” and considering that Stammy doesn’t have any updates on it, it’s clearly up to me to flex my tech-insider-knowledge in tech-blog-fashion and tell you why YouTube is down.
The team at YouTube is currently adding a new feature: pictureless videos. These new videos will be kind of like current videos but with sound only. According to an anonymous insider who does my biddings, the founders of YouTube envision huge potential for these pictureless videos… they could be used by amateur singers who wish to share their singing talent with the whole world but are too ugly for the camera, or they could be used to share events like speeches, seminars, and debates where the camera spends most of the time focused on the same dull image of staunch, dusty people in suits. According to someone important, “pictureless videos are all about enabling more users to take advantage of the benefits of Internet video. There are many situations where the visual content of a video would be superfluous. If the core content of a recording is the sound, then pictureless videos are perfect. This new innovation will bring positive results for us and our users.” When asked if YouTube is considering other innovative options for enhancing their service, this important person remarked, “we are also considering the possibility of soundless, single-frame videos, but there is still a need for research in this area before we can decide whether or not to try it out.”
This new development sounds exciting. If you ask me, innovations like these are indicative of the amazing work we can expect from the fresh, intelligent Web 2.0 minds of our time. To the team at YouTube: keep up the good work… and hurry up already!

Responses to my articleMaybe I’m ignorant (and that’s probably it lol), but why call it a video when it’s just sound? And really, it’s not that difficult to extract the sound from the video, but… and I lost my train of thought, either way, it doesn’t really “excite” me. I don’t know, I haven’t been the greatest fan of many of the features that youtube has been implementing lately.
In my opinion, it is possible to over do it, and I’m probably the expert in that.
Corinne, I hope you are joking. Read it again and look for the sarcasm. Pictureless videos aren’t really new.
And, this is what makes me look… yup, lol 2 midterms today and I’m half unconscious. I skimmed the post lol, so I’ll take your word for it.
As a side note (and an unfortunate double post) no wonder that seemed weird to read. This is me heading to sleep now.
LOL, sleep well then!
I especially liked the remark about the soudless, single-frame “videos”.
“Flickr, the best way to store, search, sort and share your single-frame sound-less motion-less videos”
Glad you liked it guys!
