Wordpress Theme: Rain in my World

Posted November 3 in Design.

As some of you know already, I retired the previous version of this design on October 8. I’ve had it sitting on my hard drive since then and today I decided to make the necessary changes to turn it into a stock theme that anyone can use. Without further ado, I present my first Wordpress Theme release: “Rain in my World.”

At this point I am going to say that this theme is at version 0.9… I have tested it myself but if others could have a look too and report back any problems then I can clean it up and post the final version to a WP theme repository.

Update: As of 11-4, I have pushed the version to 1.0. I’ve updated the README with all the important info. The theme should work just fine, but if there are any problems, do let me know.

In case you haven’t seen the design before, here’s what it offers:

  • A great design, the likes of which has graced a few CSS galleries in its time.
  • Totally clean and lightweight HTML/CSS layout, with a semi-liquid layout that is highly flexible in the latest browsers.
  • A creative-commons attribution-sharealike license, so you can modify and port this as you please, as long as attribution remains

Some more screenshots are available in my zooomr stream: screen 2, screen 3. You can also view a demo at my sandbox while I still have it up.

Like it? You can download it right here: rain-in-my-world-theme.zip or rain-in-my-world-theme.rar.

A few weeks from now I might have a chance to release a dark-on-light version of this theme if enough people are interested, but in the meantime this will have to do. Enjoy!

Update 11-6-06: A couple bugfixes:

  • I discovered that both the zip and rar archives contained a Thumbs.db file in the /images/ folder. This is a Windows file that contains thumbnail information and it is useless to the server. I have removed this file from both archives. If you have already downloaded this theme, feel free to delete Thumbs.db from the theme folder on your server. It’s a rather large file (over 50 kB) so it would be good to get rid of it.
  • I also discovered that my domain “christianmontoya.net” doesn’t work very well when you add “www.” to the front. I have updated the attribution link in footer.php to http://christianmontoya.net, which always works. If you download this theme now you will get the updated file. If you downloaded prior to today, please be so kind as to update footer.php to use the URL without “www.” It would be much appreciated.

That is all.

  2. Christian Montoya November 4, 2006

Sorry about that, apparently I don’t know how to make a simple link. It’s fixed now.

    A great work, isn’t it?
    I like it.

Actually, while the theme you are using on this site a lot better; this is a great, very attractive theme, and about the only changes I’d make are on screen and column width.

  5. Christian Montoya November 4, 2006

Dana: well, my current “theme” is not a theme yet, and I definitely won’t be sharing it until I’m done with it and I turn it into a theme.

As for the theme I released here, if you know CSS you can get into the stylesheet and edit the max-width and the width for IE to whatever you want. That’s all you would have to do to make it more narrow or wider.

Rain in my World was immediately becoming one of my dreamed WP themes when I first saw it in the last CSS Reboot!

  14. Karen November 12, 2006

Thanks for sharing, Christian. I am not a WP user, but I look forward to seeing this across the web.

  15. Oliver November 21, 2006

nice done! here I have some questions:
1, on the home page, if there are more 6 default entries, could you add a ” next page” link somewhere near the footer( when you view the category pages, it works)
2, i tried several times, but my Archives still does not show up.

  16. Christian Montoya November 21, 2006

Oliver: number 1 wouldn’t be too hard to do, I just won’t be able to do it for a while. as for number 2, I probably can’t solve that problem for you; sounds like you might have an issue with your Wordpress install or how your posts are set up.

That could be ported to TXP actually.
    Could give it a try.
    (But probable nest Year then)

    Merry christmas and regards, marios

  18. Christian Montoya December 18, 2006

marios: Feel free to port it to anything you like, as long as you leave the link to me intact :) It could use a little work too, in making it more flexible, something I will be getting to soon.

  19. marios December 19, 2006

Sure, Christian. I’d be happy to. It’s a matter of ethics to me anyway.
I found this to be interesting for two reasons.

    A) Minimal Markup
B)Convenient to get the page layout done, without to much hassle.

    regards, marios

    Ugly design

  21. marios January 2, 2007

    @Dennis,

The Design is not much important here. You don’t care much about the Design. Those are Templates, that you give away for free. The aim here is to use them, learn from them, elaborate, improve. That’s what they are made for. What is important is the concept and the page layout, which are good. ( Due to the very lean and compact HTML, that’s why I sayd to port it ,after having had a look.)

To produce excellent Design is very hard and takes a lot of work and time, especially with fluid layouts, and is not in the Scope of non-commercial Blog templating. ( And will never be )

    regards, marios
