In case you were wondering, Montastic works fine

Posted on November 11.

Well, my e-mail inbox kept me updated:

montastic updates via e-mail

I can't imagine what everyone did to pass the time while all my sites were down, but I guess there are other things to do on a Saturday night…

like, maybe, write code…

jedit snapshot

At least I finally got an ideal "software-dev environment" set up. I'm using jEdit with Bitstream Vera Sans Mono and font-smoothing applied as well as various custom syntax-coloring settings, because when you have thousands of lines of code, you need all the help you can get!

Bitstream Vera Sans Mono is a really nice programming font. I've been using it for a while now. Nice dotted zeroes, legible 1, l, i and a really nice x-height. Link.

Yeah, I've heard quite a few people say that they've been working with BVSM for a long time now and have never found a better alternative. I actually went on a long and painful search for a programming font (I was using Courier New for quite some time) and in the end I realized that they were right… BVSM is just plain good. I don't care for the dashes or right angled brackets (makes pointers look a little awkward, which C is full of) but everything else is perfect… and it's TTF too which Java apps require.

I'm interested in the new monospace font, Consolas, coming with Windows Vista; I heard Visual Studio users can already download it. I wonder how it compares? From the screenshots I've seen it doesn't look all that special…

I've been using Montastic for a few weeks now, and it's been great! The web host I had been working with was bought out several months ago, and they added lots of new features. Unfortunately, not a server status feature.

I set up Montastic and filtered it from my logfile analysis program. It confirmed the fact the server was down for maintenance, but also informed me when the server was unexpectedly down.

Hmmm - I was wondering if I should post a comment, since the focus on other comments were fonts, not Montastic

Deborah: I never have a problem with readers swinging the discussion back on topic :)

Talking of fonts, I use one of the proggy monospace fonts:

    (Can't remember which though!)

I have some Proggy fonts but unfortunately the better ones are .fon, not .ttf, and Java doesn't support .fon. So I have to go with Bitstream which is .ttf.

Mer recommends EditPlus. Google for it, it's the best.

Catalin: It looks like you are using a modified version of my theme on your site, but I don't see any attribution anywhere. Please place a link like the one I have in the footer of my demo; you can put it in the bottom of your sidebar or in a footer.
