When I was in New York City on Thanksgiving day I had the chance to check out the Charmin bathrooms installation at Times Square. You can see the video I took here:
Charmin Bathrooms NYC on Metacafe
The story is that Charmin rented a 2 story storefront and on the second floor (which you reach by escalator or elevator) they have about 20 bathrooms where you can try their toilet paper as well as some displays and a corner where you can sample Puffs tissues too. No, really, I’m not kidding! This is all marketing. Things like this make me wonder… can you have too much marketing? I’m usually really skeptical of marketing myself and this just seems like something ridiculous to the point of being a black-hole for wasting money.
Oh well, it made for a funny video…

Responses to my articleWell, its funny, but I’ve seen it before. In the State Fair of Texas in ‘05 Charmin sponsored the bathrooms in the food court. They were the nicest bathrooms. Soothingly soft tissue for your bum. Now when we had our State Fair this year (’06) no sponsorship and only rough brown stuff. LOL
Perhaps it is taking marketing far, but hey, it was nice while it lasted!
Well, it’s one thing to sponsor the State Fair, that’s kind of a community service thing to do. But renting out a whole storefront in Times Square? I can’t imagine how much that must cost.
And sorry you had to deal with the rough brown stuff this time around. Why didn’t you practice B.Y.O.R. (bring your own roll)?
