I've been playing this game called Gunz

Posted on January 3, 2007.

A few weeks back I was sitting at home and for the first time in a long time I had free time to play video games. I thought about what to play and considered quite a few games that were available to me, but I decided that I was tired of MMORPG's and I needed a new MMOFPS. I got tired of MMORPG's because I was tired of fighting computer characters for hours and hours just to level up, mining for items and gold just to buy more items, and fulfilling difficult quests that offered meager rewards. Thus, Ragnarok and Maplestory were out of the question.

I thought about playing a couple FPS's I already had installed, but I figured I would be adventurous and see if there was anything new out there I could try. That's when I found Gunz.

Gunz is just about everything I was looking for in a game. It's an action-packed FPS with RPG elements, which means that while the majority of the game entails fighting other players in deathmatch and team matches, you level up by gaining experience from beating other players and you also buy weapons and armor with the "bounty" you collect when you defeat them. Plus, aside from the usual guns, rocket launchers and grenades, you also have swords and a lot of fast moves such as dashes, dives, wall runs and wall jumps. I've been playing the game a lot over the past few weeks and the game is intense… you constantly have to be moving and your hands get tired after an hour of playing. It's definitely not for "casual gamers" and considering that I've had a huge craving for action-packed, fast-paced gaming lately, it's perfect for me.

There are some issues with the game; a lot of players have figured out how to take advantage of the game's mechanics to perform a lot of cheap sword techniques (which I can't do at all). The players are thus split into two styles, K and E, K being the ones who rely on swords, blocks, and dashes, while E being the ones who rely on guns, explosives, and rolls. I know that probably made no sense to anyone, but for the record I'm an E-styler and I'm decent in that regard. I also hate K-stylers, kinda :) There's also the occasional hacker (who always gets kicked in a matter of seconds) and the laggers, who are a bit tougher to deal with. Otherwise, the game is great, and lately I can't get enough of it.

Anyway, I'm telling you about this and I'm hoping you have a Windows-based computer with IE so you can try it out, because it's a lot of fun when you get the hang of it. Plus, there's a referral event going on right now where anyone I refer who plays at least 10 hours before January 10 will get 5,000 bounty to use in game (which is a lot, believe me). You just have to download the main ijji.com client and then download the Gunz client, and when you get to the "Welcome to Gunz!" screen tell them that Starfighter01 sent you (yep, that's me).

Oh, and did I mention that Gunz is completely free? Yep, free like air. That's my kinda game.

I played this back when it was very earlier beta… I'm glad that it is now… playable?

  2. Kris Gosser on January 3, 2007

Is it Windows only? I have a PowerBook G4… so no Parallels here :(.

  3. Christian Montoya on January 3, 2007

Sam: It must be playable, I play it all the time :)

Kris: Definitely Windows only, like most games developed in east Asia. Sorry about that.

  4. Matt on January 3, 2007

I used to play this a while ago, it's great but like most level-based games, I got bored after the first week.
A couple of my friends play this religiously, they can do some insane moves :P

  5. Brett Elliff on January 3, 2007

Holy crap is that game fun! I'm on there as Gatewayy, we should team up!

  6. Christian Montoya on January 4, 2007

Matt: I'm this /)(\ close to setting up some macros so I can do those moves, but I much prefer to just be an E-styler and fight without all those weird moves.

Brett: Cool, I'm Starfighter in-game and I usually play on Match East or Match West. I'll make sure to friend you when I get the chance.

  7. Phil Renaud on January 5, 2007

I've got a packed semester coming up; is it worth me trying to play this, knowing I can only dedicate about six hours a week to it? tops?

I've abandoned World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XI in similar endeavors.

  8. Christian Montoya on January 6, 2007

From what I've seen, you can level rather quickly in this game if you are good. I usually lead or get close to leading the rounds that I play, so with the 6 or 8 hours a week that I've been doing here at home I get along just fine. Plus, it's one of those games that fun from level 1, so you don't have so much pressure to reach the high levels.

We K-stylers are much better that you E-stylers! Don't hate us 'cuz we're better than you! Just because you E-stylers are sprayers doesn't mean you can hate those with more skills.

  11. Somebody1 on April 23, 2007

Somebody1: Sorry, I don't play Gunz anymore. I got really tired of all the hackers and the k-styling. I'm into Golf King now. I think at the highest I was 30-something, but I doubt I will get on again.

  18. Alex on November 12, 2007

    What?

  19. Butt-Hash on November 24, 2007

Um, i play gunz also i am the leader of a clan, and let me verify somethings….K-style stands for Korean Style, it was invented by a korean kid, who invented the BF, butterfly…(jump>dash>swing>block) and from there it breaks into different branches all involving sowrds and guns at the same time…for example theres the SS (slash shot)…(jump>dash>swing>switch to gun>hold down the fire button>) then theres the HS (half step) and the HHS (half half step) a.k.a QS (quarter step)….so you see, there r only really 2 main branches..K style (korean style) and D-style (dagger style) which involes tricks like i listed above but with a dagger
ps…in ur definition an E-styler is what we call a sprayer…someone who shoots uncontrollably at someone…

  20. Christian Montoya on November 24, 2007

BH: An E-styler is not a sprayer, it is just someone who doesn't use swords or daggers to kill people. An E-styler uses rolls and jumps to avoid attacks and relies on any kind of projectile, including grenades, to fight.

Playing E-style is actually a lot of fun until the K-stylers come in and start spamming their stupid techniques. I would have bothered to learn them if I wanted to have carpal tunnel in a year, but I need my hands for real work.

If there was a game like gunz that didn't have programming oversights, I would play it. I stopped playing gunz because of all the k-styling and I don't have any intention of going back.

  21. Ian Bamsey on December 3, 2007

Ive been playing for 4 years now,and im still hooked. I can play for hours without my hands getting tired, I dbf (double butterfly) almost perfectly

  22. Andrew Yang on December 29, 2007

    Okay… Just to clarify.

To Christian: What he meant was most E-stylers can't aim well and use machine guns so they're called sprayers. You really recommend you start playing Gunz again and learn K-style. Trust me, that game will be your best virtual friend later on. ^^

To Butt-Hash: The guy "Korean" didn't invent Butterfly lol… He is a Korean person from Korea who came to International Gunz (English) and first introduced K-style to everyone. They call it K-style because Korean people made it. Get your facts straight. I was friends with Korean and I also played KGunz before even IGunz came out.

Some people might think I have no life (rofl) but I played for about 5 years.

  23. Phillip (GunZ player known as Squal) on March 22, 2008
