(re)branding: A logo

Posted on April 29, 2007.

I had an idea to make a logo for myself that I could use across my various websites and after much deliberation bending curves in Inkscape, I came up with this:

logo-black-200

Hopefully it's decent-looking because I've already put it to use here and over at christianmontoya.net. Who knows, maybe I'll put this on business cards someday :)

I would post in on the logopond forums. You could get a great response there.

    Joe: Never heard of 'em.

David: Actually, no. I guess I should have but I usually don't trust my sketching ability.

    Johan: Maybe I will…

    Thanks for the comments guys.

Phil: It's A LOT like my ECE project. Let's just say I wasn't the first person to think of such a thing.

    Very horoscope-y :)

it kind of looks like ms paint. i think you need to rethink the clunky square box with the curvy m. perhaps a circle would be a better choice, or a soft color at least. the sort of "whimsical" approach also doesn't relate very well with the sober montoya herald header.

It looks like ms paint as in it was made in ms paint or it resembles the ms paint logo? I'm going to assume the former and mention that it was made with Inkscape, a vector graphics program. And the whimsical approach doesn't fit with the sober header but I should make it softer by using a circle? And the color should be different even though it's a logo and the color can always be changed?

    I'm confused.

I should mention that I have ideas to use this logo with a different design and header font, something sans-serif that goes better with the "whimsical" appearance, but I'm not ready to retire my current design so it will just have to wait.

christian, i wasn't implying if you went with the softer approach it would go with the herald typeface. you'd want to soften that as well.

do you mean the color of a logo can always be changed period, or that yours is in progress so you can change it as you want? while there are some instances of people changing the color of the logo across various mediums successfully this is usually only accomplished by companies with a really strong identity. generally speaking you'd be diluting your brand by being inconsistent.

  17. Christian Montoya on May 2, 2007

joe: Of course I can change the color of my logo to fit the design. My identity is strong like a steam engine, so it wouldn't be hard to accomplish at all.

  18. Claire on May 3, 2007

but I should make it softer by using a circle?

I wouldn't if I were you, it might look a little too much like Motortopia… Just a thought.
