Read it, comment, and share it with your friendsYou decide: should I be a serious Twitter user?
I was reading gapingvoid today and this caught my attention:
“The plan is; I shall reserve gapingvoid for cartoons and the longer, ’substantive’ posts. The day-to-day minutiae (including travel details when I’m on the road) and random links etc I shall move over to Twitter.”
This seems like a smart idea. Just like Flickr replaced my vapid photo-blogging and del.icio.us replaced my vapid bookmarking, leaving this site devoted to quality article writing and vapid “quick-blogging” (see my asides category), I could rely on Twitter for all the quick, 140 words or less stuff, and really condense this site down to quality articles alone. The only question is, would you prefer that?
Here’s my thoughts:
- Twitter is a locked-in network, and is only useful to those who are on it.
- Discussions on Twitter are hard to follow, and you can only comment by posting another “Tweet” in reply.
- I could integrate Twitter with my blog so that it posts to my “asides” category, but then those following my site’s feed would see the same content that is on Twitter.
So, what do you think? Should I move my efforts to Twitter and become a serious user? If so, should I integrate Twitter with my asides category? Should I delete my asides category altogether?
As an aside, how many of you follow my del.icio.us links? How about my Flickr photos? How many of you use Ma.gnolia? Just wondering…

Responses to my articleKeep it all in hear, I dont tweat or do the other social stuff and would rather know it all via one place…
I prefer it all to be in one place. I have enough to do online that when I want to see what’s going on in the world of Montoya, I’d rather not have to check a few sites [read: it helps me feel like less of a stalker if it’s all in one place]. And no, I don’t visit your Flickr, and this invisible black cursor still annoys me. Oh, and your giant submit comment button, too.
My preference is for asides over twitter as well.
follow my del.icio.us links? No.
How about my Flickr photos? No.
How many of you use Ma.gnolia? 42… I mean yes.
You need to get a lifestream to aggregate all your content in one place, regardless of where its generated.
I setup mine at my site: Me In One.
Mubashar: I’ve been thinking of doing that, since I do have a lot of different places now where I produce content… your app looks really good and I think I’ll sign up very soon. Thanks for sharing it!
Thanks for the comments everyone. I’m going to wait and hear what more people think, but I hear good points.
Jenn: It’s the browser. Seriously.
I know, but it’s my browser of choice.
I think I’d take Asides > Twitter, since I skim the former and don’t touch the latter.
I come into your site via RSS and basically never see the Twitter stuff - just your asides and blogs.
- If Twitter was to go, I wouldn’t miss it..
- If Twitter was to be incorporated into asides (and RSS) then I’d probably read it…
All I can say is: I don’t care anymore. Not about you personally of course. It’s just that I’m all over the place, twittering, tumbling, facebooking (?) and I’m not sure what I’m still serious about myself. In the end, blogging perhaps?
I’m on del.icio.us btw.
