Goodbye Twitter, hello Tumblr

Posted on June 26, 2007.

Today I deleted my Twitter account. It wasn't a big deal, really. I just don't care what everyone is doing right now. I played with Twitter for a few weeks after I avoided it for about a month (because everyone and their mother was blogging about it), and then I just got tired of it. Really, really tired and bored. My stream on Twitter was loaded with all this "microblogging" of friends, acquaintances, and strangers telling me things like, "off to dinner with friends" and "@xyz: yes, the cat is on fire." Did any of this add value to my life? The answer is no. So it was time for me to evaluate my time and my interests and say, goodbye Twitter, and good riddance.

Plus, I asked readers recently if I should use Twitter more and they said no. Democracy at work.

I also decided today to sign up for Tumblr. I have to thank Dean and Phil for sparking my interest in the service quite some time ago, and I have no reason as to why I was so reluctant to sign up. Tumblr gives me a nice way to blog cool things I find online, such as videos, photos, and quotes, and it also integrates with my del.icio.us account so it reposts my links from there. Sure, I could have just stuck with del.icio.us, but I realized that whenever I want to share a quote I read in blog comments or message boards, a link alone doesn't do justice. Take, for example, my first post on my Tumblr log. It's much more straightforward than a link alone.

So these are the communities I plan to be involved in regularly from here on out: 9rules, Virb, Facebook, Tumblr, Mint Pages, and (possibly) BUMPzee. I still haven't decided on that last one. Anyway, if you have a Tumblr log then do add me as a friend… I would like some other Tumblr logs to follow.

disclaimer: "today" in this entry was used loosely to refer to Monday, even though this entry was written at 2:40 AM, Tuesday morning. A few hours aren't more than water under the bridge.

Congrats on that. Although my boss loves Twitter, I could never seem to get into it and gain some value from it. Seems like such a time-waster.

On the flip-side, our next venture is into a kind of Web site that uses the Twitter concept as the foundation. Ooops! lol

By the way, I told my boss to send you an invite to our beta site, but we went public beta a day after that, so there was no need to. Check it out here if interested: http://www.comicwonder.com

I'm completely aware there are still feature holes and lapses of design. Over this week we'll be rolling out more of the sharing tools, a better find page, groups, etc.

So yeah, check 'er out. It's pretty fun!

Tumblr's a great service. I haven't removed Twitter yet (I'm thinking about using it to power an "Asides" section on my blog), but Tumblr is beoming more and more useful.

I still just prefer one location…

Let's all get rid of Twitter already. Added you and subscribed. I'm starting to love tumblelogs.

    Btw, here's how I decided.

Thanks, Kris… now I've been publicly outed as at Twit. ;)

Wired just ran an interesting story on the hidden value of Twitter — the ability to gain a sort of field sense for friends and family. The seemingly meaningless posts over time paint an incredibly detailed picture of their lives — more so than a monthly phone call or quick email ever can. But if you don't invest real time, like most things, you will never get the pay off.

That said, I look forward to checking out Tumblr!
