Advertise to me

Posted on December 13, 2007.

Ever since I started thinking about design and marketing (and how to bait people into buying your stuff), I've been paying a lot more attention to advertisements. When they come on during a show, I sit and watch them. I actually pay attention to what they're like. I think about my evaluation of them.

I've come up with what I think is my favorite kind of advertisement. I like the commercials that are like this: this is our product, this is our deal, this is the features we have, this is how long our deal is running. This usually goes for car dealerships, fast food chains, and, um, nothing else that I can think of. I know this probably sounds crazy. I like good design, I like fun commercials, and I like things that are memorable. But no matter how funny a commercial might be, no matter how much I might tell people that they should see it, I always feel like a dumb sheep when I let myself be convinced that I should buy a product because a gorilla played the drums, or a guy got buried in sand, or a bunch of bouncy balls went down a hill.

Maybe I'm just being a cynic, but I just prefer when an advertiser actually tells me why I should buy their product, instead of just baiting me in with irrelevant stuff. Even if that method isn't the most profitable or valuable, it's definitely what is in my best interest.

This could be a reason why the iPhone advertisements were so loved. Straight to the point, showing off the features, etc.
